If and when I ever get married, I’m going to Hawaii for my honeymoon. Why? For the stupidest reason of all: I feel like I’m supposed to. Indeed, it is a cliche, and I might have gotten over it years ago, had it not been for a Hallmark commercial from the ’80s, of all things, that cemented this idea in my mind.
I wrote a couple of weeks ago about the “perfect girls” who get married and become a part of one of those cool, young married couples I always wanted to be. In this commercial, a “perfect girl” is opening presents at her bridal shower, surrounded by giggly, perfect friends. She opens one after another, ooohs and aaahs, and looks like she’s having the time of her life. Just before she pulls out a Hallmark card from her mother and sheds a tear on the patio, one of the friends asks where she’s going on her honeymoon. The “perfect girl” sings out “Hawaii!”
From that moment on, something in me always knew that Hawaii would be my destination, too–I suppose to feel victorious in that I recognized an opportunity to be the “perfect girl” and seized it. I’m sure this speaks more to my insecurity than my taste in vacation spots, and I should probably see a professional. But, really, what’s the harm? It’s not like she said “Antarctica!”
